About da Vinci ®
da Vinci® Colectomy
To treat Diverticulitis & Inflammatory Bowel Disease
If you have been told you need surgery for a colorectal condition such as diverticulitis or inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease), ask your doctor if you are a candidate for a very effective minimally invasive procedure – da Vinci® Surgery.
da Vinci Surgery uses state-of-the-art technology to help your doctor perform a more precise operation than conventional instruments allow. For most patients, da Vinci Colectomy (also known as colon resection or hemicolectomy) offers numerous benefits over open surgery including:
- Better clinical outcomes in many cases1
- Quicker return to bowel function1
- Quicker return to a normal diet1
- Shorter hospital stay1
- Shorter recovery time1
This procedure is performed using the da Vinci Surgical System, a breakthrough surgical platform which enables surgeons to operate with unmatched precision, dexterity and control. By overcoming the limits of traditional open and laparoscopic surgery, da Vinci is revolutionizing colorectal surgery.
During surgery, doctors will remove the affected part of your colon and then join together the remaining healthy sections of the bowel. This reconnection is known as an anastomosis. Surgery on your right colon (ascending) is called a right colectomy; surgery on your left colon (descending) is a left colectomy; and surgery on the sigmoid colon (lower left colon just before the rectum) is called a sigmoid colectomy.
This procedure is performed using the da Vinci Surgical System, a breakthrough surgical platform which enables surgeons to operate with unmatched precision, dexterity and control. By overcoming the limits of both traditional open and laparoscopic surgery, da Vinci is revolutionizing surgery for IBD. Read about how da Vinci Surgery enables surgeons to perform the most precise, minimally invasive surgery available today.
While clinical studies support the effectiveness of the da Vinci Surgical System when used in minimally invasive surgery, individual results may vary. There are no guarantees of outcome. All surgeries involve the risk of major complications. Before you decide on surgery, discuss treatment options with your doctor. Understanding the risks of each treatment can help you make the best decision for your individual situation. Surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System may not be appropriate for every individual; it may not be applicable to your condition. Always ask your doctor about all treatment options, as well as their risks and benefits. Only your doctor can determine whether da Vinci Surgery is appropriate for your situation.
